"the parapet design demonstrates dynamic structural integrity with sculptural flair and features bronze cast images by local children"

Norfolk Park case study

Run by Sheffield Wildlife Trust and supported by the local community, Sheffield City Council, Manor Castle Development Trust and developers on the estate, the project has focussed on the rejuvenation of major open spaces within a high density residential population.

Chris Campbell was invited to work with the project development team at an early stage and through a wide range of community and open workshops has helped to create a unique design style, which has been adopted throughout the open space programme. Across Arbourthorne Rec, St Aidans Playing Field, Black Bank and the Jervis Lum Corridor, CDE Ltd have provided a variety of secure boundary treatments, entrances and seating areas all designed with sensitivity to the neighbouring environment.

A significant example of this creativity is a new steel parapet for the Jervis Lum Bridge, which links an extensive area of housing with the contemporarily designed Norfolk Park Primary School. Working in collaboration with Sheffield City Engineers, the parapet design demonstrates dynamic structural integrity with sculptural flair and features bronze cast images by local children.

Elsewhere, a group of teenagers have worked with CDE Ltd to design a steel mural depicting the changing faces of their local environment. The mural has helped to overcome the adverse perceptions of an underpass route to school and celebrates the community's distant heritage, whilst tracing its more recent economic decline and architectural failures, but very much focuses on the young people's aspirations for the future.
