"Chris Campbell’s collaboration with Allan Joyce Architects at Sure Start’s Centre for the Child, in Sneinton, Nottingham, has proved to be a significant milestone in the development of early stage design partnerships. "

Sure Start - Centre for the Child

Working closely with architect, engineer and the Sure Start Team, CDE Ltd have been able to integrate artistic concepts into both internal and external working spaces. The object has been to explore the creative experiences of young children and incorporate their ideas into the structural and decorative elements of their early years learning environment.

The resulting imagery creates bold statements of form, colour and texture, which are both welcoming and stimulating, containing a complimentary use of fabricated structural steel, bronze, cast aluminum and polished stainless steel. Although instantly decorative, all elements have a functional application, providing a bridged corridor across the atrium, fencing, reception desk, seating area, signage and visual aids to learning.

The Centre for the Child demonstrates that the influence of an artist-designer at the earliest stage can realise far more than surface decoration or embellishment to the built environment.

The Centre for the Child has recently featured as the headline case study at the 2005 national SCALA (Architects) conference and has been commended in several professional & commercial publications.
